I had an interesting client call my office this past month. He desperately needed bankruptcy to save him from some pretty serious credit card debt. This was a really good guy who had been affected by the economy. He had taken some unemployment income while he was looking for a job. The problem was that he was actually getting a few minor jobs while he was getting his unemployment check. The problem with this is that if I filed bankruptcy for him this could trigger some kind of investigation on him. It is not very likely that it would but why put my client at risk. In the end I decided it was best not for him to file. In general, I also requested that he straighten everything out with unemployment. Lesson to be learned – don’t try to outsmart the system – it will only catch up to you in the end.
